Beware of BAD Roofers

Protect Your Home/Business from Hail, Wind and Major Storms

Hail can occur in any strong thunderstorm, which means hail is a threat everywhere. When it hits, it can shred roof coverings and lead to water damage to your ceilings, walls, floors, appliances and personal possessions. If you think your roof could possibly be damaged after a big hail, wind or thunderstorm, it's important to note that most roofing jobs are not for the do-it-yourselfer. Unless you have lots of experience in replacing roof coverings, hire a professional roofing contractor Like Bradley Roofing to handle this job.

When a hail storm strikes:

  • If you are indoors when a storm with large hailstones strikes, stay there. Because large pieces of hail can shatter windows, close your drapes, blinds or window shades to prevent the wind from blowing broken glass inside. Stay away from skylights and doors.
  • If you are outside, move immediately to a place of shelter.

    Storm Checklist:

    • After a hail, wind or major storm, damage to your home or business can be overwhelmingly stressful.  Here are just a few tips that every homeowner or business owner should follow to help ensure you are doing everything you need to do to protect your greatest assets.
    • Contact Bradley Roofing for a Complimentary Roof Inspection  at 972-480-1946.  As experienced roofing consultants and insurance specialists, Bradley Roofing will assist in determining if there is enough damage to your home or business to warrant filing a claim with your insurance carrier.
    • After a complete professional roof inspection and analysis, Bradley Roofing will not only inspect your roof for damage but will also assist and work on your behalf in filing your claim.  We will meet with you and your insurance adjuster if damage is suspected and will work with your insurance adjuster to negotiate on your behalf to assess the damage and to determine the scope of the work needed for repair.
    • Be very wary of out-of-town roofers who move into an area and set up shop following a storm. While some of these firms are reputable, many have collected money from homeowners and moved on to the next storm site without paying suppliers or leaving work unfinished.  Always check out any company or person doing work or repairs to your home.
    • Check trees, shrubs and plants around your house.
    • Check patio covers, screens, windows and fences for damage.
    • Check vehicles for dents and broken or cracked glass.
    • Cover any broken glass in your car to prevent interior damage.Cover any broken windows and holes in your roof.

Some of these problem warning signs will help detect potential problems:

      • loose or missing shingles or tiles
      • blistered, curled or split roof shingles
      • loose nails
      • exposed nails
      • dark patches on asphalt shingles
      • large amounts of granules in the rain gutters - granular coating is wearing away
      • sagging in the ridges or in the center of the roof
      • rusted or corroded metal, loose shingles in the valleys, plumbing vents or near chimneys
      • broken or loose shingles at ridge lines and hip lines
      • rusty metal or loose shingles where vertical sides of the house meet the roof
      • blisters, depressions near vent pipes, clogged drains on flat roofs, separations in flashing
      • overflowing gutters or excess water pooling near the foundation of the house

      To Re-Roof or Not?

After a hail storm has hit your area, it may or may not be obvious that you need a new roof.  While some hail may produce leaks that appear immediately, quite often hail may only fracture your shingles, which leads to premature roof failure.  An inspection by a Bradley Roofing Consultant can help answer this question.  If you have a roof that is fifteen years old or older and it starts to show signs of deterioration, or produces leaks, it is time to call Bradley Roofing for a  Complimentary Roof Inspection and consultation.

      Wood Shake Shingles

Something every homeowner should know:   If your roof has wood shakes under your asphalt shingles, this type of substandard roof tends to acquire more storm damage than a conventiaonl roof installed over plywood decking.  Insurance companies also deem wood shake shingles as a fire hazard.  By law your insurance company must pay to remove both layers of shingles and install plywood decking if you have sufficient damage.

There was a time when wood shakes and shingles were one of the few roofing materials available.  However, today there are a number of superior roofing products to choose from.  Wood shakes and shingles are frequently selected because of their aesthetic appeal and good insulation properties and durability.  Although wood shakes may posess those characteristics, wood shake and shingle roofs possess a highly undesirable characteristics.  Wood shake and shingle roofs increase the risk of structure loss due to fire.
